What is the primary goal of this website?

I have heard it said that the only way to really learn a technology is to use it. I believe this to be true. This website is the first step towards using the cloud to accomplish a practical goal. I have earned many certifications over the past few years and this website is another attempt to use these technologies to do something cool.

A few goals that I have for this website:

  • Over the past few decades I have built many websites. Some have been static and some have not. I am very comfortable with HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. I love working with these old technologies and building websites with a simple text editor. The simplest goal of this website is to provide a few hours of fun to an old web designer.
  • Building a static website and hosting it on AWS is the simplest way to start using AWS for web hosting. It is a great introduction to not only S3 but also Route 53, Cloudfront, AWS IAM, Bucket Access Policies, Cloudtrail, CloudWatch, etc.
  • Learning and using the technologies listed above is easy but mastering them and using them in a secure way that follows Cybersecurity Best Practices is much more difficult. The only way to really learn these technologies is to use them.
  • A future goal of mine is to pentest Ketelsen.co and use it to better understand how it might be vulnerable to attack. This website is an ideal target for my personal experiments with pentesting. I don't expect that this website will ever get a large number of visitors and, unlike many websites that make money from advertising or ecommerce, Ketelsen.co could go offline for an hour or so with minimal impact to anyone. When needed, this website can easily restored from backups. To learn more Penetration Testing in AWS environments refer to the AWS Penetration Testing Policy
